With over 14 million subscribers and a view count nearing 5 billion, Romanatwood is one of the most successful vloggers the world has ever seen. Popular for his funny pranks and clickbait titles, there’s a lot to learn from studying his channel.
What camera does RomanAtwood use to create his awesome vlogs? He currently uses several different cameras, and has owned even more over the years, so the answer is a bit longer than you’d expect! Let’s get into it.
What Camera Does RomanAtwood Use Today?
As of 2018, Roman is primarily shooting his vlogs with the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II This is by far the most expensive vlogging camera used by any of the YouTubers we’ve analyzed so far, but with the money that he makes, it is a very worthy investment.
This camera costs almost $6000 for just the body, and it brings very impressive statistics to the table. Most importantly, it is capable of shooting 4k video at up to 60 frames per second – something almost no other “vlogging” grade camera is capable of.
One of the biggest reasons many YouTubers choose this camera for vlogging is battery life. The massive battery cell allows you to shoot in 4k for 3 hours straight before dying. Sure, with any camera you can simply buy more spare batteries, but swapping out battery packs can result in a vlogger missing an absolutely critical moment. Minimizing the swaps is ideal, and clearly was very important to Roman. A similar perk is the inclusion of dual card slots for twice as much recording potential.
As many of his vlogs and prank videos involve multiple angles, Roman requires multiple cameras. While his other backup rigs aren’t as overkill as the 1DX, they are still top-tier cameras. The secondary camera he uses is the Canon 5D Mark IV.
With a massive 30.4 MP full-frame sensor, a 61-point autofocus system, and 4k video recording at up to 30 fps, it comes very close to the performance of the 1DX, and is a very worthy standalone camera for just about any content creator.
What Other Cameras Has RomanAtwood Used?
Of course, The 5D Mark IV is not the only camera Roman has used to pump out his high-quality content. He also makes use of the G7x Mark II, a very popular compact camera used occasionally by almost every other YouTuber we’ve researched. The quality is able to match that of a low-end DSLR, and is very surprising for a point-and-shoot.
In addition to the G7x, he also makes use of a very similar camera from Sony, the RX100 IV. Despite its relatively cheap price and smaller form factor, the RX100 has one really great thing going for it: Slo-mo. The camera has stellar image quality, but is also capable of shooting full 1080p at up to 960 frames per second.
This allows you to shoot super slow-mo footage better than even cameras like the Canon EOS 1DX without spending $10,000 on a proper HFR camera. Roman clearly likes to have a well-rounded kit.
Finally, like any other vlogger, he makes heavy use of GoPros to film action shots, underwater footage, and to get additional angles of his pranks.
We definitely don’t think you need to spend over $3000 on your camera body to produce vlogs like RomanAtwood. At the same time, we think his camera is a very solid recommendation for anyone with a similar budget.
Remember, purchasing any of these cameras is not going to immediately make your content as compelling as RomanAtwood’s. It is very unlikely that your life is as interesting as his. Before dropping $5500 on a camera, work hard to make the best content possible and make sure that being a vlogger is right for you!
