how to tag someone in a youtube commentEvery popular social media platform has a feature that allows users to tag others in comments. It can be as simple as tagging someone’s user name with the “@” symbol. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case with the popular video streaming platform, YouTube. Unless of course, you’re replying to someone else in a comment chain. We will show you how in just a bit.

Why Can’t I Tag People in YouTube Comments Anymore?

YouTube was purchased by Google on October 6, 2006. Since then, Google has made many changes to the YouTube platform, from the interface, to its features. There was the feature to tag someone in a YouTube comment, but it was a part of another social media platform Google tried to popularize called Google+.

Google integrated Google+ accounts to be connected with every channel on the platform. When tagging someone in a YouTube comment, you would be tagging the user’s Google+ account or the brand account for their channel.

While Google+ was actually an amazing social media platform, it didn’t become the popular success Google was hoping for. They announced that as of March 2019, Google+ would be officially shutting down.

You might have noticed that this tagging feature isn’t available anymore. Since this announcement, Google has been preparing YouTube for the removal of Google+ connected accounts. Because of this, the feature to tag someone in a YouTube comment has been removed.

However, it’s still possible for you to tag someone in a YouTube comment, but only if you are replying to someone in a comment thread. Here’s how you can do it.

How to Tag Someone in a YouTube Comment (The only current method)

This is someone’s comment thread:

As you can see if you hit reply to the main comment, the feature to tag is not available.

Here you can see what happens when you click reply to someone in the comment thread. You see that once you click reply to someone in the comment thread, it automatically tags the user in the comment you are writing.

Now let’s post a comment and see what happens to the tag.

Now you will see that after posting the comment with the automatic tag, the user’s name is tagged in the post and highlighted in blue.  And that’s how you tag someone in a YouTube comment.

Will YouTube implement a new comment tagging feature?

As of right now, this is the only way to tag someone in a YouTube comment. Many users have expressed their frustration with YouTube’s comment section features, as it can be more complicated compared to other social media platforms.

While nothing has been formally announced yet, there is a chance the Google will work on implementing a better tagging feature for YouTube’s comment section. All we can do now is wait as Google still has to deal with Google+ shutting down.

Hopefully, this article has helped you learn more about how YouTube’s comment section works and the reason behind some of the lost features that users have been noticing. YouTube is still an amazing platform for aspiring videomakers and content creators, however, their comment section could definitely use some work.

We’re looking forward to seeing what Google does next with the video sharing platform.
